Trip Overview
On our 7-day Machame Route trek, often called the “Whiskey” route, you will experience the raw beauty of Mount Kilimanjaro while ascending via one of its most scenic paths. With its diverse landscapes – from lush rainforest to stark alpine desert to icy arctic summit – Machame provides a captivating backdrop to your journey. However, this route is more demanding and therefore better suited to more adventurous or experienced trekkers.
Day by Day
Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate, covering 35 kilometres. Here you’ll meet your mountain crew and begin your trek through the verdant rainforest. It’s a steady climb to Machame Camp where you’ll spend the night, already at a lofty 3,000m.
As you leave the forest canopy behind, the path steepens, leading you to the Shira Plateau. The hike covers approximately 5 kilometres, revealing spectacular views of Kibo across the plateau as you approach Shira Camp.
Today’s trek involves a gentle climb towards the imposing Lava Tower, at 4,600m, before descending to the Barranco Camp. This climb high, sleep low strategy aids acclimatization and prepares you for the days to come. The journey covers around 10 kilometres.
After conquering the Barranco Wall, you’ll descend through the Karanga Valley to reach the Karanga Camp. This shorter day (approximately 5 kilometres) allows for much-needed rest and acclimatization.
You will ascend towards Barafu Camp, crossing alpine desert with views of Mawenzi Peak to the right. Covering roughly 4 kilometres, it’s essential to rest and hydrate at camp, as you’ll start your summit attempt the same night.
The toughest day, but also the most rewarding. You’ll start the climb to the summit in the early hours of the morning. As dawn breaks, you’ll reach Stella Point (5,735m), then continue on to Uhuru Peak. After savoring the achievement, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp, covering a total of 18 kilometres.
The final descent of 10 kilometres brings you back through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll collect your summit certificates before being driven back to Moshi.
