Marangu Route

Often referred to as the ‘Coca-Cola Route,’ the Marangu Route is the oldest and most well-trodden path up Kilimanjaro. It offers the comfort of sleeping huts along the way with amenities like beds and solar-powered lights.

The trek typically takes 5-6 days, making it one of the quickest routes to Uhuru Peak. However, the shorter acclimatization period means that success rates are not as high as some of the longer routes.

Machame Route

The Machame Route, known as the ‘Whiskey Route,’ is one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro, known for its stunning and diverse landscapes. It offers a longer acclimatization period, increasing the chances of reaching the summit.

This route usually takes 6-7 days and is slightly more challenging due to steeper climbs. But the reward is unparalleled scenic beauty.

Lemosho Route

Lemosho is a lesser-trafficked route, allowing for a more private experience. It starts on the western side of the mountain and crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau, before merging with the Machame route.

Taking 7-8 days to complete, it allows for excellent acclimatization and offers an exceptional balance between scenic views and success rate.

Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It’s a quieter route, making it a perfect choice for those looking for a more peaceful climb.

The trek usually takes 6-7 days, offering a more gentle gradient and thus suitable for those without any mountain climbing experience.

Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is the least traveled and most challenging route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. It’s a steep, short, and direct climb, often chosen by experienced climbers seeking a challenging adventure.

This route typically takes 6-7 days and is renowned for its stunning panoramic views. It is recommended only for seasoned trekkers due to its demanding nature.
